Kaymer pessimistic for 2020

Martin Kaymer considers the implementation of international golf tournaments this year to be unrealistic due to the corona crisis. Several tournaments have been cancelled.

Germany’s top golfer Martin Kaymer no longer believes in a return to the course this year in view of the corona pandemic. “How can we meet in one country when every country has different regulations? And when will that work? To be honest, I hardly see it this year,” the former world number one said in an interview with SID.

There are, according to Kaymer, so many question marks. “If you’re allowed to enter at all, do you have to be in quarantine?” Due to the corona crisis, golf tours around the world are currently suspended. Currently, the BMW International Open in Munich (25 to 28 June) and the French Open near Paris (2 to 5 July) have been cancelled from the European tour.

In view of this situation, he is trying to “deal only with the current situation” and he is wondering “what I can influence”, the two-time Major winner explained. Kaymer still keeps his body going. “I work a lot on my fitness, because when it starts it’s a marathon, you have to be fit every week. I can lay the foundation now,” said the 35-year-old.

Kaymer has prepared himself well for the new circumstances. “I had built myself a small indoor facility, a golf simulator, to stay in the swing,” said the Rhinelander, “I want to play a little bit too, because I simply enjoy it. What I miss most is going outside and seeing the ball fly and smelling the grass, all in all the feeling that golf gives you.

Kaymer shows understanding for the preservation of restrictions in the corona crisis, as announced by Chancellor Angela Merkel and the heads of the federal states last Wednesday. “One should not take oneself too seriously, one should see the big picture and not just one’s part, sport or profession,” said Kaymer.
