Mode: How the BBL final tournament runs

The Basketball Bundesliga announces further details about the planned final tournament. It is now clear in which mode the ten teams will play against each other.

The Basketball Bundesliga is pushing ahead with plans to continue playing in the middle of the Corona pandemic.

For the planned tournament in June, which is to be played at the central Munich location, two groups of five teams each are planned. This was announced by the BBL on Thursday. After the group phase, quarter and semi-finals as well as the final will be played in a return match to determine the German champions.

In addition, the league submitted its hygiene and safety concept to the responsible authorities on Thursday. Further details of the concept were not disclosed at first. Skyliners Managing Director Gunnar Wöbke explained in an interview, however, that the concept was in many respects based on that of the German Football League.

Approval still missing
However, the politicians have yet to give the league permission to continue the suspended season.

“We’ve set a deadline of May 18th, then a decision must be made. If there is a cancellation, unfortunately the season is over,” said managing director Marko Pesic of the champions Bayern Munich in a ZDF interview on Instagram.

Pesic is also hoping that the release for the Bundesliga will have a positive influence on the decision of politicians. “I think that the decision made yesterday is a decision for sport. We’re happy that the footballers have managed it. Indirectly, this is also a good sign for us,” he said. The basketball should now move “in the slipstream of football”.

In the event that the policy is approved, Pesic demands responsible action from players and those responsible. “We can’t run around arrogantly. We have to be aware of our responsibility and need a lot of intelligence and discipline. This is a mammoth task,” he said.
