Surprising change of heart for Donald Trump!
The controversial US president pleads for a comeback of Colin Kaepernick in the NFL. “If he deserves it, he should, if he has the playing ability,” Trump said in an interview with a journalist from the Sinclair Media Group.
However, the head of state of the USA emphasized that the quarterback must prove himself in sports. “If he can’t play well, then I think it would be unfair,” Trump added.
The 74-year-old was originally responsible for Kaepernick not getting a new contract in 2017, after the latter got down on his knees during the US anthem in 2016 in protest for equality.
Trump rebukes NFL and US football
Trump had criticized this several times and worked on it, so that Kaepernick has not found a team that wanted to hire him until today.
Recently, he complained again about the NFL and the US football leagues that had allowed him to kneel at the anthem in the wake of the current protest movement against racism.
“I was very disappointed with the NFL when they published their statement and I was very disappointed with US Soccer. We support US Soccer and now they come and say you can do whatever you want. No. We must respect our flag and our national anthem,” Trump emphasized.
L.A. Chargers think of Kaepernick
Kaepernick has been keeping himself fit for years for a possible return to the best football league in the world. Most recently, NFL boss Roger Goodell had spoken out in favour of giving the 32-year-old playmaker a chance.
It is possible that Kaepernick will receive those from the Los Angeles Chargers. Head coach Anthony Lynn announced on Wednesday that he would look into the routinist and possibly offer him a workout.
