Islanders bankruptcy: Greiss must get out

In the playoffs semi-final, the New York Islanders experience a debacle in game 1 against Tampa Bay Lightning. Keeper Thomas Greiss hardly holds anything – and is replaced early.

Ice hockey national goalkeeper Thomas Greiss has experienced a black night two days after the first play-off shutout of his career.

With the New York Islanders, the German goalie lost the first game of the semi-final series in the North American professional league NHL against Tampa Bay Lightning in Edmonton without a chance 2:8.

Greiss was allowed to start again, but after three fast goals he left the ice after only eleven minutes. Against the Philadelphia Flyers, the man from Füssen was the first Islanders goalkeeper since 1975 to go without conceding a goal in a seventh game.

Greiss replaced – Kühnhackl outside

This time he had to let three of nine shots pass before he was replaced by Semyon Warlamov.

“After a shutout you cannot change the goalkeeper. So Thomas Greiss has started again,” said coach Barry Trotz. “But then I had to change to bring a little more calmness into the game.”

Striker Tom Kühnhackl was not used.

Game two will take place again in Edmonton in the night to Thursday. The opponent for the final of the Stanley Cup will be determined by the Dallas Stars and the Vegas Golden Knights.
