Davis Cup: Zverev to the Davis Cup renunciation:”I would have loved to play”.

World number four Alexander Zverev (Hamburg) for the first time made a statement about his decision to give up the Davis Cup at the Laver Cup in Prague.

“I would have loved to play,”said the 20-year-old,”but I have a few people I work with who were a little opposed to it.”

His problem after a long time on grass and hard court, according to Zverev,”is that I never really play well on sand in the first week.It would have been a difficult change and it would have been “certainly not good for my body and for the tournaments that are yet to come”.Zverev’s still got seven tournaments to play until the end of the year:”It’s a very long season.”

However, he was sure from the very beginning that “the German boys in Portugal would win the thing.Jan-Lennard Struff, Tim Pütz, Cedrik-Marcel Stebe and Yannick Hanfmann had secured the class retention for the World Group 2018 with a victory in Portugal.
