WTA: Barthel loses in Wuhan against Olympic champion Puig

Mona Barthel (Bad Segeberg) failed at the WTA-Tournament in Wuhan/China after a changeable appearance at the opening hurdle.

The 27-year-old was defeated in the first round by Olympic champion Monica Puig from Puerto Rico 0:6,7:6 (7:0), 4:6.

In the first set, the world ranking-51 is placed.Barthel only scored seven points against the 19 places of the poorer qualifier.In the second round, Barthel fought her way into the tiebreak after a 1:5 deficit and a defended match point, which she won without losing points.In the decisive set Puig had a break to win.

In Wuhan, in the former world number one Angelique Kerber (Kiel), Julia Görges (Bad Oldesloe) and Andrea Petkovic (Darmstadt), who fought her way through the qualification, three German players are still in the field.
