Laver Cup: Federer:”We all just wanted to play tennis.”

At the end of the first Laver Cup Roger Federer paid tribute to the legends of tennis – especially Rod Laver – with moving words.

“One day I had the vision that we should honor the great players of our sport, because there is only a limited number of roles that a legend can have in our sport.Coaching is obviously one, the Seniors Tour or the Champions Tour, and I thought that’s just not enough,”said Federer at the award ceremony.

“I felt that we should be seeing the legends of our sport more regularly and thought about who we want to thank – and these are not just the players standing on the pitch today. There are so many more who have paved the way for us to enjoy playing in front of a spectator’s backdrop like this and financing our existence by living our dream.Because we all just wanted to play tennis our whole lives – and here we are.”

The fact that the Laver Cup could be a competition to the problematic Davis Cup, as some critics claim, did not want to leave Federer standing, as he said during the weekend:”The Laver Cup is FOR Tennis,”says the Swiss.

The second edition after the successful start will be available next year, then from 21.till 23.The World Cup will take place in Chicago on September 9, where the world’s team will have a home match.
