ATP: Wrong start for Thiem in Chengdu

Dominic Thiem failed in the last sixteen at the ATP World Tour 250 tournament in Chengdu. The top seeded Lower Austrian lost 6:7 (6), 4:6 against Guido Pella in China.

Thiem started furiously, but the early break didn’t bring the expected safety. After Pella was able to equalize 2:2, a tough wrestling at eye level developed.Lots of backhand slice and some inaccuracies on the forehand side characterized the game of the world rankings seventh.

Thiem remained the more active player despite his high error rate, but failed to reward himself in the tiebreak. The Argentinean defeated his chances of winning the set with a brilliant forehand. After Thiems frame goal, the first round was decided.

At the side of Jan-Lennard Struff, the Lichtenwörther had already taken up contact with the conditions on Wednesday. But also here without success: The German-Austrian doubles lost against Leonardo Mayer/Albert Ramos Vinolas 4:6 and 2:6.

In Act Two, Thiem could not increase significantly.Pella immediately took the mark-up off his insecure opponent and transported the lead to the match win.The South American, however, had his hard work and hardship with the zipping. After four missed match balls, however, the netting edge helped him to victory.

For the 27-year-old, this is his second victory against Austria’s number one.Last year, the current number 72 of the world won the Rio de Janeiro semi-final in two sets.
