Largest success in Caroline Garcia’s career: The Frenchman defeated Ashleigh in three sets in the final of the WTA Premier 5 tournament in Wuhan.
“Trust your game.”Craig Tyzzer has given this to his protégé Ashleigh Barty. Not at some point, but at the score of 5:4 in the second set, after Barty had already won the first act in the tie-break.Caroline Garcia, however, showed even more confidence in his own game at the moment – and scored a 5-5 equaliser.
Reverse sign to first sentence: The Frenchwoman had twice failed to close the passage with her own markup.Barty broke at 4:5 and 5:6, won the tiebreak 7:3.
Barty, who had already said goodbye to Agnieszka Radwanska and Karolina Pliskova in the week from Wuhan, went into second place again with a break in the lead, Garcia equalled to 6:6.And now it was the French woman who took the short decision, with 7:4 – and as the player who made the game more active.
In the decision, the lightly favoured Garcia, who had defeated Angelique Kerber in the first round, but then dropped early to 5-2 and managed what neither she nor her opponent had managed before: to finish a set with her own serve. For the 24-year-old Frenchwoman, it was her fourth WTA title, the last of which Garcia had won last year in Mallorca.
