WTA: Beijing: Petkovic and Görges continue, Witthöft fails in round one

Fed Cup players Andrea Petkovic (Darmstadt) and Julia Görges (Bad Oldesloe) followed former world number one Angelique Kerber to the second round at the WTA tournament in Beijing.

Qualifier Petkovic won against Dutch player Kiki Bertens 6-4,6-0, Görges defeated American Madison Brengle 6-4,6-3.Only Carina Witthöft failed on Sunday because of her opening hurdle.

The 22-year-old from Hamburg, who had played her way into the main draw after qualifying, lost in the first round against 11th seed Agnieszka Radwanska from Poland 5:7,3:6.Mona Barthel (Bad Segeberg) was already 6:7 (4:7), 1:6 defeated the Romanian Sorana Cirstea on Saturday.

Görges will meet Daria Gavrilova (Australia) in the second round, while Petkovic will face Karolina Pliskova (Czech Republic/No. 4).Kerber, who reached the second round on Saturday with a 6-2,7-5 win over Naomi Osaka of Japan, will play Alize Cornet (France) or Wang Yafan (China).
