ATP: Goffin wins first 500 title in Tokyo

David Goffin has won the ATP World Tour 500 tournament in Tokyo: The Belgian defeated Adrian Mannarino in two sets to win his fourth career title, the first in this category.

750 points within two weeks – not a bad score for a man who was still limping over the pitch in Cincinnati in his first-round match against Nick Kyrgios. After his victory in Chengdu, where David Goffin had won the final against Alexandr Dolgopolov, the Belgian beat Adrian Mannarino from France 6-3 and 7-5 in the final of the ATP World Tour 500 tournament in Tokyo. One year ago, the Belgian number one in the final was still defeated by Nick Kyrgios.

This means that Goffin will be tenth in the ATP world ranking on Monday, with excellent chances of qualifying for the ATP final at the O2 Arena in London.

Goffin played concentrated from the beginning, got the break to 3:1.Mannarino also plays an excellent season, the Frenchman is ranked among the top 30 players in the Tour’s annual ranking, having recently reached the third round at the US Open, where he was defeated by Dominic Thiem.

Goffin dominated the rallies from the baseline, also convincing as a serve.Mannarino rarely managed to interrupt the rhythm of his opponent with his variable game. 6:3 the first set went to the favourite – who had to give up his serve for the first time in the second round, to 2:4.The Belgian immediately fought back. The decision was made in the eleventh game of the second set, when Goffin took the lead with a backhand return to the line with break. After that, Mannarino didn’t score a point anymore, after 84 minutes the last ball of the match sailed from the backhand of the Frenchman to the end.Goffin was allowed to drop his bat and cheer towards his box.
