ATP: Smooth two-stage win for Dimitrov

Grigor Dimitrov narrowly won the Masters tournament in Shanghai against American Sam Querrey in two sets.

A solid performance was sufficient for Dimitrov to reach the next round in China. The Bulgarian’s returns were the decisive factor against Querrey’s strong serve. After a fiercely competitive first serve game in which Dimitrov had to fend off two break points, the world’s No. 9 found his way into the game and won the break 3-1.

Dimitrov had three break points at 5-2, which Querrey was able to defend with a good serve. However, the Bulgarians didn’t let anything burn at their own service and snatched the first round with 6:3.

The second set should be more competitive.Querrey broke through the Bulgarian’s first service game and took the lead 2-0 before he had to give up his serve immediately. Both players then didn’t bruised each other on the serve and finally served their way into the tiebreak. Two small wacklers cost Querrey the second round at the end, which Dimitrov won 7:3 in the tiebreak. In the end, the 26-year-old favourite won 6-3 and 7-6 (3) and will now meet Rafael Nadal’s winner against Fabio Fognini in the last sixteen.
