Lacoste competition: 5.

Lacoste and tennisnet raffle 1×2 tickets for the ATP final in London in November!Answer today’s fifth Monday question correctly, and you are already in the draw: What is hidden behind the “Poloshirt L. 12.12”?

With Lacoste you inevitably associate not only the crocodile, but also the polo shirt. The origin of this elegant polo goes back to the 1920s, when Rene Lacoste himself was inspired by polo players’ short-sleeved appearance. What is taken for granted in tennis today was a world first at that time.

In 1933 he developed the “L. 12.12 polo shirt”together with Andre Gillier, the mother of all polo shirts. However, Lacoste and Gillier didn’t leave anything to chance, using a new breathable fabric and designed a stretchy and lightweight shirt – ideal for playing tennis.

The lacoste-code “L. 12.12” can be easily explained. The L simply stood for Lacoste, the 1 for the fabric Cotton Petit Pique, which was unique at that time, the 2 for the shirt version with short sleeves and the 12 for the 12.The model that Gillier designed and Rene Lacoste finally chose for production. To this day, the polo shirt stands for grace and elegance – thanks to Rene Lacoste and Andre Gillier.
