ATP: Roger Federer rushes to Basel quarter-finals

Roger Federer is still on his way to his eighth title in Basel: The local hero had no problems with Benoit Paire and is already in the quarter-finals.

The first set in the St. Jakobs-Halle in Basel lasted only 23 minutes, after which Federer had taken the first step. Paire was treated on the back afterwards, but still held up better in the second round – but with a double error he lost the break to 3:4. Federer left the first match point unused, but secured a forehand win after 57 minutes.

In the afternoon Juan Martin del Potro, who had taken fourth place, had kept his chances of winning the ATP finals in London. The Argentinean finished the qualifier Julien Benneteau safely in two sets. Marin Cilic already had major problems in the Croatian duel with Borna Coric: This year’s Wimbledon finalist won 6-3,3-6 and 6-3 in the end.

Roger Federer could now face Denis Shapovalov in the quarter-finals. The aspiring young Canadian played the last match of the day in Basel.
