WTA: Maria Sharapova and Monica Puig help in Puerto Rico

Olympic champion Monica Puig and five-time major winner Maria Sharapova help the hurricane victims in Puerto Rico.

For Maria Sharapova and Monica Puig, the 2017 tennis season has finally been history since last weekend, and the balance sheets of the two men are likely to be different: Sharapova has crowned her comeback with the tournament victory in Tianjin, Puig is constantly looking for the spirit that brought her to Olympic gold in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. In the past few days, however, they have jointly turned their attention to things that are much more important than placing them in the world rankings: aid for hurricane victims in Puerto Rico, the home of Monica Puig.

Immediately after the destruction by Hurricane Maria, Puig had launched a website (www.youcaring.com/donatewithmonica) for the rebuilding of the island. Sharapova, who had already fought an exhibition fight against Puig in Puerto Rico less than a year ago, devoted the next year’s income from the “Sugarpova”line to charity in 2017.

It was about 140,000 US dollars worth of goods that Puig and Sharapova had shipped to Puerto Rico at the beginning of the week, including gas stoves and medical supplies for first aid. The two athletes in the city of Loiza, which was hit particularly hard by Maria, took over the distribution themselves. After visiting a children’s hospital in San Jorge.
