Roger Federer is in the final of his home tournament in Basel: After a smooth two-set win against David Goffin, the Swiss player will play for his eighth title against Juan Martin del Potro on Sunday.
Roger Federer quickly forgot about the small phase of weakness against Adrian Mannarino in the quarter-finals of the ATP World Tour 500 tournament in Basel: The local hero and tournament favourite David Goffin crossed the line in exactly one hour with 6:1 and 6:2 and will now meet Juan Martin del Potro in the final, who will also defeat Marin Cilic in two sets in the first semi-final. For the Argentinean, Federer’s victory was very important: after all, Goffin is a direct competitor for one of the two places still open for the ATP final in London.
The Belgian has a big task ahead of him with the Davis Cup final in France, a participation in London would be a premiere for Goffin. Federer, on the other hand, enjoys something like domestic rights in London, in Basel anyway. Against David Goffin, the Maestro’s record now stands at 7-0 victories, it was not Federer’s first clear success.
It’s pretty good against Juan Martin del Potro, Federer leads 17:6. In the current campaign, the two of them have already confronted each other three times, most recently in Shanghai, the Swiss player went off the field as the winner at the US Open del Potro. In Basel, however, the Argentinean has a head start: in 2012 and 2013, Juan Martin del Potro won the finals. Federer was only able to succeed in 2007 in his hometown.
