Angelique Kerber has also lost the second match at the WTA Elite Trophy in Zhuhai and is out of the group stage. Against Ashleigh Barty, Kerber lost in two sets.
The German had to admit defeat of her Australian opponent in her second match in the group “Rose” with 3:6 and 4:6.
The match started well for the number 19 in the world and the serve of the two-time Grand Slam winner ran smoothly. In the middle of the first round, however, some mistakes crept in at Kerber and Barty knew how to use them. At a score of 2-3, the Australian took the serve from her opponent and then served up after exactly half an hour to win the set 6-3.
Barty also caught the better start in second set and broke through Kerber’s serve to take the lead 1-0, but Angie fought her way back and used her sixth breakball to re-break. As a result, the two opponents had to engage in a hard exchange of blows, in which Kerber was unable to exploit their chances of another break. The Germans took revenge for this at the score of 2:2 and Kerber had to give up their serve again. Kerber was unable to oppose her opponent and after 72 minutes, she left the court as a loser.
After the opening defeat against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, it is the second defeat in the second game for Kerber and the Kieler has to pack her suitcases early.
From a German perspective, Kerbers Porsche team Germany colleague Julia Görges is still in the race for the semi-finals in Zhuhai. The German will meet the French player Kristina Mladenovic tomorrow and will enter the match with self-confidence with a strong win in her opening match against Magdalena Rybarikova.
