Juan Martin del Potro will not be available as a substitute for the ATP World Tour Finals starting on Sunday. The 29-year-old Argentinean feels physically incapable of competing in the season finale.
Five weeks in a row, del Potro had tried everything to get on the train to London. In the end, only one victory was missing. The quarter-final defeat in Paris-Bercy against John Isner put tournament winner Jack Sock ahead of “Delpo” and Pablo Carreno Busta.
In contrast to the Spaniard, however, del Potro will not take up his reserve role:”I’m going home now,” the Tower of Tandil told La Nacion.
Del Potro, who would have been second substitute for the tour finale, justified his renunciation with physical exhaustion:”I have pain in my back and legs, it’s not just the wrist, but it’s” beautiful pains “that have come from the many victories of the last few weeks.
20 victories in only five defeats since the US Open have made del Potro one of the strongest late year players. If you have physical worries, it’s very difficult to compete against these top players,”he remarked about the tough competition in London.
