Richard Gasquet wants to break new ground: After four years, the Frenchman ends his cooperation with coach Sergi Bruguera and will be looked after by Thierry Champion in the future.
In Vienna, Sergi Bruguera had hiked through the Stadthalle in an extremely relaxed manner, and was delighted with the success of his protégé Richard Gasquet over local hero Dominic Thiem. After four years, however, the Frenchman and his Spanish coach have now decided to end their cooperation – amicably. Starting next year, Thierry Champion will be seated in the Gasquet box.
The 31-year-old will finish the 2017 season according to his age – probably not satisfactory for a man who has already been in the top ten. Gasquet’s biggest success in recent months has been the Montpellier final, where he was defeated by Alexander Zverev. As in the summer of Montréal, when Germany’s number one was able to fend off a Frenchman’s match ball in an epic fashion.
Richard Gasquet has won a total of 14 titles on the ATP Tour so far, the last two in Antwerp and Montpellier last year. There may be another highlight in a few days’ time: In the Davis Cup final against Belgium. However, there is a great deal of competition within France – with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Vienna winner Lucas Pouille, who have regained strength.
