Once again Hamburg as tournament director for Michael Stich – and once again the Wimbledon winner of 1991 wants to play a match against John McEnroe.
1992 was a memorable year for Michael Stich – especially in the doubles. Sting was to win the gold medal at the Olympic Games in Barcelona alongside Boris Becker. But before that, however, the 49-year-old had written Wimbledon history a second time: One year after his final victory against Becker in the singles, Stich won the title in doubles with John McEnroe.
Under very special circumstances: The final match against Jim Grabb and Richey Reneberg lasted more than five hours, dressed for two days and ended with a 19:17 for Stich/McEnroe in the fifth set.
In the summer of 2018, the two tennis legends now want to meet again at the court, this time on opposite sides of the net. As in 2012, this meeting is expected to be a highlight of the tournament week at the German Open in Hamburg, which will take place from July 21st to 26th. until 29.7.2018 may be held in the Hanseatic city for the last time.
Tournament director Stich is looking forward to a reunion with his ex-colleague “John has lost none of his ball feeling and still plays great tennis. I’m sure that as a thank you to our fans for their loyalty at the end, we’ll be able to offer our fans one last time great tennis, the best entertainment and a match full of emotions.”.
