WTA: Arrivederci, Roberta – Vinci plans resignation

For Roberta Vinci it will soon be over. The Italian plans to retire from professional tennis in May 2018 and has chosen a very special location.

The likeable Italian wants to quit and withdraw from the WTA tour. Vinci keeps a close eye on the place and date of her retirement from professional tennis. Where else, than in their home country Italy would be a suitable place for this step. On her Instagram page and in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport, the 34-year-old stated:”I’m withdrawing in this way: I’m going to play for another five months and then stop playing in Rome.”

In 2015, the 1.64-meter woman was in the final of the US Open. In the semi-final, she knocked out Serena Williams and took the American with her slice and wit. Vinci lost the final against her compatriot Flavia Penneta and celebrated her greatest success despite the defeat.

One reason for her resignation could have been last year. Her own body kept causing Vinci problems and she missed several tournaments in 2017 due to injuries. The cheerful nature fell back to 117th place in the world rankings and lost its place at the top of the world. In the middle of 2016 Vinci ranked seventh and celebrated her career high. In addition to the singles, the 34-year-old was extremely successful in doubles and was at the top of the double world ranking five years ago with her partner Sara Errani. Vinci won a total of five Grand Slam titles in the doubles competition and took advantage of her good volley game in the singles.

All in all, Vinci scored ten tournament victories since her debut in 1999 on the WTA Tour,”My goal is to arrive in good form in Rome and say goodbye with a bang,”Vinci explained.
