WTA: Sloane Stephens – Burned out in week one

Sloane Stephens has crowned her sensational comeback in 2017 with success at the US Open. Since then, however, the American has not won a match.

After all, Sloane Stephens knew how to spread good news during the last few days: She is now Serena Williams’ stable mate, the reigning US Open winner told her fans via Twitter. However, it won’t be enough to compete in Serena’s partner look at the Australian Open, as you know, the defending champion doesn’t feel ready for a start in Melbourne.

So for the first time Stephens wore her new clothes to Sydney, in the opening match against Camila Giorgi. The Italian woman is known as rather impatient, but only knows that her playing speed is the highest possible. Giorgi did not stay long with Stephens on Monday, the affair lasted only 65 minutes and caused the US-American woman the next setback.

Strictly speaking, Sloane Stephens has been waiting for a winning experience since her triumph at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in early September 2017, neither on the WTA Tour nor in the Fed Cup final in Minsk was the 24-year-old able to win a match.

After the outing in Sydney, Sloane Stephens felt first and foremost tired:”I haven’t even played an entire season and have already burned out in the first week,”said the current world rankings-13. after the defeat against Giorgi.

Stephens returned to the tour in 2017 after a lengthy injury to the Wimbledon Tournament, but after two semi-finals in Toronto (defeat against Caroline Wozniacki) and Cincinnati (out against Simona Halep) he found his rhythm surprisingly fast. Stephens played free at the US Open, leaving Madison Keys with no chance in the final.

The conditions for the first major in 2018 are now completely different. Difficult day today, but overall things are looking up,”she concludes in Sydney.” I’m looking forward to coming to Melbourne and playing there.”
