WTA: Angelique Kerber: New serve thanks to coach Fissette

It seems that Angelique Kerber has left the 2017 season mentally behind her. But it’s not only mental but also the former world number one has honed the serve.

Angie Kerber announced at the beginning of the season that she wanted to leave the previous year behind her. And with the start at the Hopman Cup in Perth (three individual victories) and her performance in Sydney, she seems to have managed it. According to some experts, Kerber is back on the Hot List for 2018, including the Australian Open, which she won in 2016.

Above all, Kerber seems to have finally tackled an old problem with new coach Wim Fissette in the off-season: the often wobbly and harmless serve. Kerber surprised with their previous appearances with much more speed in service.

Speaking to Syndey, she admitted a few changes. She tries to do something different on both serves with her legs:”Jump off more – and don’t take her left leg forward in the impact movement any more”.

The difference is easy to see when comparing the Kerber impact of the past with that of 2018:

However, the changeover seems to be anything but a coincidence. Tennis journalist Tumaini Carayol has compared some former Fissette protégés – and the improved serve figures speak for themselves. Considering how much tennis can only account for one or two percent over the year, we should really prepare for a strong Angie Kerber in 2018!
