Austrailian Open: 15-year-old Marta Kostyuk sets the next record

A young Ukrainian player caused a sensation at the Australian Open. Only 15 years old Marta Kostyuk defeated China’s No. 1 in her first match. One bang Shuai.

Kostyuk slipped over the qualifying into the main round and won the start directly against Peng Shuai 6:2,6:2. This made her not only the first 15-year-old to win a Grand Slam in 13 years, but also the youngest winner of the Australian Open since Martina Hingis in 1996.

“This gave me the feeling that I could achieve everything here,”said the 15-year-old.

The match between the two players, who separate almost 500 places in the world rankings (Shai: 27, Kostyuk: 521), lasted 57 minutes. In the first set the teenager had to take a medical timeout.
