Australian Open: Marterer follows Zverev into the third round of Melbourne

Maximilian Marterer has followed Alexander Zverev into the third round of the Australian Open in Melbourne. The 22-year-old from Nuremberg prevailed against the Spaniard Fernando Verdasco after 3:27 hours 6:4,4:6,7:6 (7:5), 3:6,6:3.

Only on Tuesday, after 14 defeats in a row, did Marterer celebrate his first victory on the ATP tour.

Zverev (20) had previously won the German duel with Peter Gojowczyk (28) from Munich 6-1,6-3,4-6,6-3 despite a weak phase in the third set. On Saturday he will play South Korea’s Chung Hyeon for a place in the next round.

Chances for the round of the best 16 may also be calculated by torture. The World Rankings 94. meets tennys Sandgren from the USA, who won against former tournament winner Stan Wawrinka (Switzerland) 6-2,6-1,6-4 without any problems. Wawrinka had undergone knee surgery last year and was happy to be able to start in Melbourne.
