Australian Open: Mertens beats Görge’s conqueror Cornet

French rider Alize Cornet dropped out two days after her surprising victory over Germany’s number one Julia Görges (Bad Oldesloe) at the Australian Open in Melbourne against the Belgian Elise Mertens.

Cornet suffered from the heat of 5:7,4:6 in the third round against Elise Mertens (Belgium) and was treated at the beginning of the second set. As on Thursday, the temperature was almost 40 degrees. Mertens will face Croatian Petra Martic in her first Grand Slam round of sixteen on Sunday, who will compete in her 27th round. Luksika Kumkhum won 6-3,3-6,7-5 against qualifier Luksika Kumkhum.

At the beginning of the fifth day of the Australian Open, Elina Svitolina beat 15-year-old Marta Kostyuk 6-2 and 6-2 in a purely Ukrainian duel. Last year, Kostyuk had won the junior women’s competition in Melbourne and had made it into the main draw.

Also in the fourth round are Magdalena Rybarikova and Denisa Allertova. The latter prevailed over Magda Linette, Rybarikova needed three sets against Kateryna Bondarenko.
