Australian Open:”Rusty” stirs up the doubles

Sensation in the doubles competition at the Australian Open: Llleyton Hewitt, who had already finished his career, defeats the reigning US Open Champions with Sam Groth.

So Sam Groth will end his career after this Australian Open. Lleyton Hewitt, on the other hand, will continue to play forever. Another interpretation is not possible after the second round coup at the Australian Open: Hewitt and Groth defeated the reigning US Open Champions Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau in the doubles competition of the first major of the year after a 2:12 hour game time of 7:6 (2), 4:6 and 7:5.

Suddenly it’s not impossible that Hewitt will fall back on this double in Brisbane in two weeks – then it’s against the German Davis Cup team to advance to the second round of the men’s team event with the longest tradition.

Hewitt also proved his still impressive form in the run-up to the Australian Open – in two ways: Firstly, as mentor of the 18-year-old Alex de Minaur, who had reached the final of an ATP World Tour tournament in Sydney for the first time. But it didn’t go badly for “Rusty” as well: Although the “Tie Break Tens” were only a short show fight, a victory against Novak Djokovic is worthy of all honours under almost all circumstances.

The chances of a double-race prolongation are not bad: The Spanish pairing Pablo Andujar and Albert Ramos Vinolas are waiting for round three.
