Australian Open: Svitolina makes history and plays in the circle of favourites

Elina Svitolina makes her first appearance in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open and makes history. The Ukrainian is playing an increasingly popular role in Melbourne.

Elina Svitolina becomes the title favourite of the Australian Open alongside her colleagues. The Ukrainian continues to play big in Melbourne and rushed into the quarter-finals unimpressed. The number four in the world met Czech Denisa Allertova in the round of sixteen and did justice to her favourite role.

After a few problems at the beginning, the 23-year-old played her whole class and won eight games in a row. After just 59 minutes, a crunching backhand return winner sealed the 6-3 and 6-0 win. But that’s not all: Svitolina is the first Ukrainian to reach a quarter-final at the Happy Slam. Exclamation point to the competition!

“I always try to concentrate on the match and have a lot of self-confidence,” said Svitolina, who placed fourth after the match,”I’m always doing my best”. Flying under the radar after this brilliant performance for the Ukrainian is over. The alarm bells of the other troughs should howl loudly.

Nevertheless, Svitolina will not become a self-runner. Angelique Kerber is in great shape and “feels something like 2016”, says the Kieler. Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki, too, moved into the quarter-finals in the third round after a brief moment of shock. The number two in the world rankings said at Eurosport:”I feel very good and look forward to every match.

Of course, Simona Halep is number one in the women’s ranking list. However, the Romanian woman was not yet fully convinced and seems to feel the pressure on her shoulders. One thing is clear: Svitolina is on an equal footing with her rivals and has so far been fully convinced. In the semi-final duel, the 23-year-old will face Elise Mertens. A difficult but feasible solution for the power woman. Svitolina – this name should now be high on the betting slips for the title win.
