Australian Open: Wozniacki in the final of the Australian Open for the first time

Caroline Wozniacki (27) has reached the Australian Open Final for the first time in her career. Denmark’s World Ranking List runners-up from Denmark won against tournament debutante Elise Mertens (22) from Belgium after 1:37 hours 6:3,7:6 (7:2). For Wozniacki it is the third Grand Slam finale, her first two having lost at the US Open in 2009 and 2014.

In Saturday’s final on Saturday (9.30 a. m. CET/Eurosport) Wozniacki will face either Angelique Kerber (Kiel) or world number one Simona Halep (Romania). Should Kerber win the semi-finals, Wozniacki will return to the top of the WTA ranking. She last stood there in January 2012.

Wozniacki, who forgave a match point in her first semi-final at the Australian Open in 2011 against eventual winner Li Na (China), said:”That’s crossed my mind. I was so uptight at 5:4. Usually I’m calm, but my legs were shaking,” Wozniacki fought off two set points and turned her first match point into a win.

On Wednesday last week, Wozniacki had just averted the early end in Melbourne. In the second round against the world rankings-119. Jana Fett from Croatia saw her face two match balls in the third round at a score of 1:5, but released herself from the critical situation.
