Nord Kombi: Geiger runs in second place – Watabe further ahead

Junior World Champion Vinzenz Geiger (Oberstdorf) has advanced to second place on the second day of the Seefeld Triple of Nordic Combineers and has thus achieved his best career result. The 20-year-old, who had gone from seventh place to the 10 km cross-country skiing race, finished 1:05.5 minutes behind the sovereign leading Japanese Akito Watabe and was thus the best German.

The Norwegian Jarl-Magnus Riiber (+1:08.9) is in third place ahead of Sunday’s final. Relay World Champion Fabian Rießle (Breitnau) lost his podium position and dropped back to sixth place behind the Norwegian overall World Cup leader Jan Schmid and his compatriot Espen Andersen with a gap of 1’22.0 minutes to Watabe.

“I don’t know exactly how I did it,” Geiger told ARD television:”I hid well in the first three rounds of the competition, after which I felt good and wanted to go through with it.

The other DSV starters fell short of expectations, especially on the hill. Olympic champion and title defender Eric Frenzel (Oberwiesenthal/+1:59.4) fought his way to tenth place on the cross-country ski run, record world champion Johannes Rydzek (Oberstdorf/+2:22.7) only follows on 13th position. The decision in the fight for overall victory will be made on Sunday (12.30/15.30 hrs/ARD and Eurosport) in a mammoth competition, when two jumps and 15 kilometres in the cross-country ski run follow. The winner at the climax of the World Cup winter will receive 200 points, the previous four triple editions have all been won by Eric Frenzel.
