WTA: Serena Williams’ Comeback: All information on her return

Serena Williams has announced her comeback on the WTA tour: The former World Ranking Leader will be back at the Indian Wells tournament in March (5th-18th place). March live on DAZN). Here you can find all the information about Williams’s baby break and her comeback.

After her victory at the Australian Open 2017, the 23rd. Grand Slam singles title of her career, Williams had not played any more matches on the WTA tour. Later it became known that she was pregnant: On the 1. September 2017 her daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr. to the world. Despite her time-out, she finished the year in 22nd place in the world rankings.

Originally Williams wanted to return to the 2018 Australian Open and defend her title. After a showmatch against French Open winner Jelena Ostapenko on 30. However, Williams lost 2-6,6-3,5-10 in December, but due to a lack of fitness she decided against taking part in the first Grand Slam of the year.

Serena Williams will return to the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells. This was announced by her coach Patrick Mouratoglou:”The plan is for her to return to the Indian Wells tournament in March.”

Williams will, however, be competing in the Fed Cup for the USA from 10-11. In February the Americans will meet the Netherlands in Asheville, South Carolina.

The hard court tournament in Indian Wells near Los Angeles has been held since 1989. It belongs to the category of the WTA Premier Mandatory tournaments, i. e. the tournaments whose importance is to be arranged directly under the Grand Slams. Indian Wells is also known colloquially as the “Fifth Grand Slam” and is one of the most popular tournaments on the tour.

After her father was racially insulted in 2001 and the spectators whistled her out in the final, Serena Williams boycotted the Indian Wells tournament for a total of 14 years. She did not return to Indian Wells until 2015, but was injured before the semi-final. In 2016 she lost the final against Victoria Azarenka.

In 1999 and 2001 she won the tournament.
