WTA: St.

Julia Görges won the WTA-Tournament in St. Gallen. Petersburg was the only German to reach the second round. The Greek Maria Sakkari defeated number five of the seed list 6:2,7:6 (7:5).

For Görges (Bad Oldesloe) it was the 16th time. Victory in the past 17 matches, at the Australian Open she had failed in round two at the French Alize Cornet.

“I wanted to be aggressive and concentrate on my own game. I know that my serve is a powerful weapon, as we have seen again today,”said Görges. Italy’s Roberta Vinci is her next opponent in Russia’s 799,000 dollar competition.

Andrea Petkovic (Darmstadt), on the other hand, lost 6:7 (5:7), 1:6 against the Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu. Mona Barthel (Neumünster) and Tatjana Maria (Bad Saulgau) had already failed in the first round on Monday.
