The duo Martin Zehetner and Harald Schachinger, who are working for TC Deutsch Wagram, won their first joint HTT Grand Slam double title at the UTC La Ville on Tuesday evening. In the finals of the HTT-Australian Open, the HTT stars, who were playing together for the first time in their HTT careers, defeated Florian Kopf & Andreas Roch, also appearing for the first time in this constellation, with 6:3,6:4, and thus succeeded Matthias Braun & Christoph Beutler, who were missing last year’s winners for injury reasons. In the first season doubles tournament, which was a quantitatively appealing and qualitatively very high class with 20 teams, Zehetner-Schachinger emerged as deserved champions after only one lost set in the entire course of the tournament. 2000 points for the victory lifted the new HTT-Australian Open Double-Champions into the top ten of the HTT-Computer-Doppel-Rankings and into the middle of the HTT-Championships. For the second time since 2015, Martin Zehetner has won the HTT Australian Open in doubles. On Tuesday evening, the 36-year-old reiterated his first-ever victory together with Martin Steinbauer in the final against Florian Kopf and Andreas Roch at the side of Harald Schachinger in his January Grand Slam double victory three years ago, making him and the two-time victorious men Harald Selak, Andreas Harbarth, Stefan Rieger and Rainhard Boisits the record winner of the first place. The decision in the first set was brought about by Zehetner & Schachinger in the sixth game with Florian Kopf on serve, when the later winners were able to break the power server after 40:0 lead and a double error at the decision point.
Also in the second round, Zehetner and Schachinger presented themselves at their best on their own serve, serving their way through the final without any problems and without any break chance. At the end of an impressive performance, the new HTT Australian Open Double Winners in the first Grand Slam finale of the new double season had only one break point in the first set at 1-1. Also at 1:1 the German Wagramer championship players cracked then in the second set for the first time also the serve of Andreas Roch, in order to come at the end with 6:3,6:4 to title teachings. A title that hung on a very thin silk thread less than 24 hours before. After all, Zehetner and Schachinger were in a semi-final duel with the 2015 HTT-Australian Open Single Champion Bernhard Scheidl and the 2017 HTT-Australian Open Double-Champ, Matthias Braun at 4:6.4:5 and serve Scheidl, before Schachinger managed to pull off the perhaps decisive return winner.
