ATP: Mayer leaves Sofia early

Experienced Florian Mayer from Bayreuth was eliminated in the first round of the ATP tournament in Sofia. The 34-year-old lost his opening match in the Bulgarian capital against Mirza Basic (Bosnia-Herzegovina) 4-6,1-6.

Mayer, who had lost to Latvian Ernests Gulbis as Lucky Loser after a defeat in the qualifying finals, missed out on a 1ighth-final duel with Philipp Kohlschreiber (No. 4). This means that Florian Mayer is still waiting for his first victory in an ATP tournament this season: In Doha, the former Davis Cup player was defeated by Stefanos Tsitsipas in round one, while Mayer had the same fate against the Russian Evgenyi Donskoy at the Australian Open.

The Augsburg Kohlschreiber has a walk-through in the first round. Maximilian Marterer (Nuremberg) intervenes in the tournament on Wednesday with his first-round match against Malek Jaziri (Tunisia). For both Germans, their appearance at the ATP World Tour 250 tournament in Sofia will be the first time since the first Grand Slam tournament in 2018. At the Davis Cup victory of the German team in Brisbane against Australia neither Kohlschreiber nor Torterer had been in the line-up.
