Fed Cup: Klaffner puts Austria in the lead

Melanie Klaffner brought Austria into the Fed Cup game against Poland with a 1-0 lead. In Tallinn, the ÖTV Quartet is playing in the Europe/Africa Zone, Group 1 also against Turkey and Latvia.

Tailored kick-off for the red, white and red Fed Cup team in Estonia’s capital. Melanie Klaffner won in the first singles of the day against Magdalena Frech 6:3 and 6:4. In a match with a total of 13 serve losses on both sides, the 27-year-old from Waidhofen on the Ybbs had the better nerves in the end.

As the world’s number 523, Klaffner had entered the game as an outsider, after all, her Polish opponent is currently in 144th place on the world rankings. In the second singles of the day, Julia Grabher (WTA 244) will face Magda Linette (WTA 56), who is also to be favoured. Austria’s top player Barbara Haas is missing from today’s line-up, Barbara Haas.

Fed-Cup captain Jürgen Waber has set the goal to maintain the class. Last year, the ÖTV team finished the tournament in fifth place thanks to three individual points from Haas.
