Fed Cup: Grabher puts Austria in the lead

Julia Grabher led the Austrian Fed Cup team 1-0 in the second game of the Europe/Africa Zone in Tallinn against Turkey. The 21-year-old won her match against Basak Eraydin after a hard fight in 2:33 hours with 5:7,6:4,7:5. Barbara Haas, recovered from a gastrointestinal virus, will play in the second game on Thursday at noon. The double forms the conclusion.

The ÖTV ladies had lost their opening match against Poland 1:2 on Wednesday in Group 1. Prior to the race, team boss Jürgen Waber had set the goal as his goal. Latvia’s final group opponent on Friday will be Latvia with French Open winner Jelena Ostapenko, who surprisingly lost her singles match against Turkey’s top player Cagla Buyukakcay on Wednesday.

Last year Team Austria finished the tournament in fifth place thanks to three single points from Barbara Haas. The group matches will be played in two groups of four or three in Tallinn. Two teams will be selected from the four relay winners to qualify for the World Group Playoffs in April. The last in each group must play against relegation to the Europe/Africa zone, Group 2. Two teams descend. The third-place finishers in the groups of four do not play any placing games.
