Fed Cup: Serena Williams makes a comeback after baby break

Former world number one Serena Williams has officially returned to the tennis circus after her one-year infant break at the Fed Cup match between the USA and the Netherlands. The 23-times Grand Slam winner, together with her sister Venus, contested the meaningless doubles at the end. Venus had already won her second victory in the singles (7:5,6:1 against Richel Hogenkamp) 3:0 and made the semi-final draw perfect.

Serena Williams had her last official match last year in the final of the Australian Open against her sister. Shortly before New Year’s Eve, the 36-year-old tested her form in Abu Dhabi against French Open winner Jelena Ostapenko, but decided after a close defeat against defending her title in Melbourne.

For the last time so far, Serena Williams had been in Italy for the Fed Cup team of the USA in April 2015. Defending champions USA will now face France in the semi-finals, beating Belgium 3-2. In the second semifinals, Germany is expecting the Czech team (21/22. April).
