ATP: Rankings: Alexander Zverev again number four

Grigor Dimitrov and Alexander Zverev change places. The 20-year-old from Hamburg is now once again the world’s number four. In the rear regions, two qualifiers climbed steeply.

For various reasons, Grigor Dimitrov and Alexander Zverev decided not to defend their title in Sofia and Montpellier last week. While the Bulgarian gave his damaged shoulder a longer break,”Sascha” recovered from the tough Davis Cup triumph in Australia.

The fact that Zverev was able to pass the current ATP world champion is due to the addition of the 18 best eligible tournaments. On their return to Rotterdam, however, a duel between the two world ranking neighbours will only be possible in the final.

Otherwise, there were hardly any shifts in the upper reaches: Dominic Thiem remains sixth. For Montpellier triumphant Lucas Pouille, the Frenchman is now 16.

Maximilian Marterer (ATP 78) is among the world’s top 80 for the first time after making it to the quarter-finals in Sofia. There you will also find Mirza Basic. The Bosnian had not only eliminated torture on his way to the title, but had also set the boundaries for Florian Mayer, Philipp Kohlschreiber and Stan Wawrinka, among others.

While Qualifier Basic improved 52 places, Quito winner Roberto Carballes Baena improved by 31 places. The Spaniard, who also started as a qualifier, thus ended the uncontested rule of Victor Estrella Burgos, who won all three previous matches in Ecuador.

The “King of Quito” was overthrown in the round of sixteen by Gerald Melzer, who is the second-best Austrian in 97th place.
