Handball: Germany mourns Kretzschmar’s mother Waltraud

Former handball star Stefan Kretzschmar mourns his mother and German handball is one of his most successful players.

Three times world champion Waltraud Kretzschmar died on Wednesday last week, surprisingly only a few days after her 70th birthday. Birthday. Their death was confirmed by the German Handball Federation on Wednesday.

“The name Kretzschmar stands for great times in German women’s handball. Waltraud Kretzschmar was an idol of our sport as a three-time world champion. We mourn for a great player. Our thoughts are with her family,”said DHB President Andreas Michelmann.

The long-time player of SC Leipzig played 217 matches within 15 years for the selection of the former GDR, many of them as captain, and scored 727 goals. In addition, Waltraud Kretzschmar also won silver at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal in 1971,1975 and 1978, and bronze in Moscow four years later.
