Angelique Kerber has rejoined the Australian Open 20 days after her semi-final outing with a convincing victory on the WTA Tour. In her opening match in Doha, the Kieler prevailed against Australian Samantha Stosur 6-4,6-1 after a first-round freilos.
In the round of sixteen, Kerber will now face the tenth seeded Brit Johanna Kontakt.
Julia Görges (Bad Oldesloe) had already mastered her second round match before. After their smooth opening win against Lucie Safarova, the world number ten won the second duel with a Czech woman in 24 hours against Barbora Strycova 6-2,3-6,6-1. On the other hand, Carina Witthöft (Hamburg) missed the round of the 16th place with a clear 2:6,0:6 against the Danish world number one and Australian Open winner Caroline Wozniacki.
Kerber, who has only been defeated in 2018 to date, needed exactly one hour for success against Stosur and convinced with a strong quota on the first serve. Against the world’s number 44, she turned her third match point.
Görges, who on Tuesday took part in the Fed Cup semi-finals against Czech Republic (21. /22. The first round of the 3.17-million-dollar tournament, which took place on April 16th, will be the first round of the event. The next opponent of the 29-year-old is the winner of the match between the sixth seeded French Open winner Jelena Ostapenko (Latvia) and the Romanian Mihaela Buzarnescu.
