ATP: Another competitor for Thiem and Zverev in Acapulco

The field of participants in Acapulco is getting stronger and stronger: Jack Sock, the sixth man from the top ten in the ATP world ranking list, has already been named.

The premiere of the New York Open at the Nassau Coliseum was missed by Jack Sock, the best-rated American in the ATP world ranking. For the 500cc tournament in Acapulco, Sock called it late – and was awarded a wildcard by the organizer. Just like the Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis, who had shown a very respectable performance at the Hopman Cup at the beginning of the year, but after his long injury break, he is only in 216th position in the rankings. At the Australian Open, Kokkinakis lost to Daniil Medvedev in round one.

Jack Sock is also still waiting for his first success in the current campaign: A listless appearance in Auckland against Peter Gojowczyk was followed by a first-round defeat against Yuichi Sugita in the first Grand Slam tournament of the year.

However, the special interest in Acapulco is the return of Rafael Nadal. The Spaniard will relinquish his top position in the ATP charts to Roger Federer on Monday, who had to give up early in Melbourne in the quarter-finals against Marin Cilic. The injury at the hip caused a break, in Mexico Nadal has to defend 300 points after his final move last year. Sam Querrey is expected to defend the title in Acapulco, and by 2016 Dominic Thiem had celebrated his first title on the ATP World Tour 500 level.

Australian Open finalist Marin Cilic and Alexander Zverev are two more top ten players for the hard court tournament.
