ATP: Rio, Marseille, Delray Beach – The way forward for the gentlemen

No break for the sand-court cracks in South America and the indoor players in Europe. The ATP circus is also continuing in the USA.

Most of the points for a tournament win, 500, will be played in Rio de Janeiro from today. With his triumph in Buenos, Dominic Thiem arrives in the Olympic city of 2016, and also operates as the title defender. At the beginning Thiem, seated at position 2, meets the Serbian Dusan Lajovic. In round two, there could be a duel with Gerald Melzer: Austria’s number two veteran Pablo Andujar will play in his first match. Also present is Andreas Haider-Maurer, who will face Aljaz Bedene, final loser against Thiem in Buenos Aires.

Top seeded in Rio is Marin Cilic. The Croatian originally wanted to take part in the Argentina Open, but then decided to take a longer break. There are no German starters this year.

InMarseille, on the other hand, are Mischa Zverev and Maximilian Torterer in the main draw, while Yannick Maden still has a chance to make it through the qualifiers. Zverev will start with Blaz Kavcic and Gilles Simon as the martyr. The seed list is led by Stan Wawrinka and Lucas Pouille. The latter won the title in Montpellier just over a week ago. David Goffin, the tournament’s real favourite, had to cancel after his accident in the semi-finals injured in Rotterdam. As a result, Roberto Bautista Agut, actually only number five of the tournament, is at the top of the grid.

The American celebrity finally meets in Delray Beach, or at least parts of it. Jack Sock will spend his third tournament appearance in 2018, the first two many very unsatisfactory. As a prelude, Sock had originally been assigned the most difficult task imaginable on Sock: Milos Raonic, after his long break from injury. After the rejection of nick Kyrgios, the Canadian has now moved into the table as the seed, however, Soch meets the qualifying John-Patrick Smith. Juan Martin del Potro will also serve Delray Beach. We are looking forward to Hyeon Chung’s first appearance since the Australian Open. The Korean had to cancel his start at the New York Open because of his foot injury, in Delray Beach a Lucly Loser is waiting in round one with Cameron Norrie.
