Sabine Lisicki (Berlin) and Carina Witthöft (Hamburg) were eliminated in the last sixteen of the WTA tournament in Budapest.
Lucky Loser “Viktoria Kuzmova (Slovakia) lost to Lisicki (28), who dropped to 173rd place in the world rankings, in 62 minutes with 2:6,4:6. At the start of the Hungarian Ladies Open, former Wimbledon finalist Lisicki had won 0:6,6:4,6:2 against the French Pauline Parmentier after a chase.
Already after the first match, Witthöft’s 250,000 dollar indoor event was over. The 23-year-old, number 51 in the WTA ranking, lost surprisingly well against Jana Cepelova 2:6,2:6. The German number three only managed to win three of its eight service games. Slovakian qualifier Cepelova is ranked 114th in the world ranking.
On Wednesday evening Tatjana Maria (Bad Saulgau) played against the Hungarian local heroine Timea Babos (No. 3) for a place in the round of sixteen, where she would meet Mona Barthel in the German duel on Thursday. The 27-year-old from Neumüster had already won her opening match 7-6 (7-3), 5-7,6-0 against the Ukrainian Kateryna Kozlova on Monday and continued her upward form.
