At the WTA tournament in Acapulco, the semi-finals are set. One lap further on is the favourite Daria Gavrilova, the French rider Kristina Mladenovic has to say goodbye.
The ladies in Acapulco are in the hot phase. Much to the regret of Thiem friend Kristina Mladenovic. The French player had to admit defeat in the quarter-finals of Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko.
The number 14 of the world caught a raven-black day and didn’t seem to find her match. Kiki “made too many avoidable mistakes against her opponent, who was placed worse than her 26 places, and won six breaks throughout the match. Too much for a good result against the aggressive Ukrainian. The result was a 2-6,2-6 defeat on the scoreboard for Mladenovic, who had to pack her suitcases as early as last year.
Tsurenko, on the other hand, is now waiting for the Australian Daria Gavrilova, who caught up with Veronica Cepede Royg after her faux pas.
“Dasha”, however, had greater difficulties than initially assumed. The powerhouse won the first round with 6:4 and faced a bravely fighting Paraguayan. Cepede Royg did not get stuck and won the 6:4 set equalization against the house high favorite. The outsider paid tribute to the strenuous match in the third round, however, and was finally beaten 2:6 in the decisive round.
The trip for US Open winner Sloane Stephens is over in the upper half of the tableau. The US-American lost to Stefanie Vögele from Switzerland after three fiercely contested sets. After Stephens celebrated her first victory in Acapulco after 195 days, the Swiss was too constant on the opposite side. A few minor mistakes were fatal for Stephens and so Vögele ended up with a 6:4,5:7 and 6:2 win for Vögele on the scoring board.
In the last quarter-finals, the Chinese Shuai Zhang and Rebecca Peterson from Sweden met. Zhang couldn’t live up to her favorite role and lost the Scandinavian with a surprisingly clear 2:6 and 1:6 after just over an hour’s play.
