Fabio Fognini has interrupted the winning streak of Pablo Cuevas in the semi-final of the ATP World Tour 250 tournament in Sao Paolo and will play against Nicolas Jarry for his sixth title on Sunday.
Cuevas had won the title in Sao Paolo in the last three years, but at 4:6,2:6 after only 71 minutes on the red ashes, the Uruguayan man was without a chance against Fognini. Somewhat surprisingly, the 30-year-old Italian will face Nicolas Jarry from Chile in the final on Sunday. Another premiere for Jarry: Last week in Rio de Janeiro, 22-year-olds entered the semi-finals of an ATP World Tour 500 tournament for the first time, and now the first final is on. In the 6:7 (5), 6:4 and 6:4 against Horacio Zeballos, the Chilean was particularly convincing with his serve: No less than 19 aces hammered Jarry into his opponent’s field.
As a clear favourite, however, the Italian experienced racer enters the final. After all, Fognini is 53 places ahead of Jarry in the ATP charts as number 20 in the world. Fognini won his last individual title in 2017 in Gstaad.
