Juan Martin del Potro won the ATP World Tour 500 tournament in Acapulco: the Argentinean defeated Kevin Anderson from South Africa 6:4 and 6:4.
For del Potro it was the total of 21. Title of his career, the first on level 500 since Basel 2013. The 29-year-old from Tandil thus remained successful for the seventh time in a seventh comparison with Anderson.
The match got off to a balanced start, with a score of 3-3, Del Potro struck for the first time as a backstroke – despite Anderson’s 40:15 lead. In the third game of the second set, Anderson, last year’s finalist at the US Open, was shocked: The South African rushed to the net, del Potro countered with praise. Anderson fell, had to be treated by the physiotherapist two points later. And still lost that service game. Del Potro did not allow for a comeback.
The 2009 U. S. Open Champion 2009 thus set a final mark behind an impressive week: Anderson was already the third top ten player en suite after Dominic Thiem and Alexander Zverev to be defeated by the Argentinean without losing a set. All in all, the Acapulco winner has a record of 13-0 victories against these three men. DelPotro will move up to eighth place in the ATP world ranking.
