WTA: 125K victory: Sara Errani wins Mini-Indian-Wells

Former French Open finalist Sara Errani gets better and better after her break and won the small Indian Wells edition.

Errani won the $125,000 tournament in the final with a 6-4,6-2 win over Kateryna Bondarenko, who was seeded four times.

After her last year’s Tortellini suspension, which drove her down to 280th place, Errani had regained a direct foothold and reached the Tianjin semi-finals. At the 125K tournament in Indian Wells, however, she had to go through qualifying and won eight matches in a row on her way to the title. From 125th place it is back in the top 100. In May 2013, Errani was already ranked fifth in the tennis world, and by 2012 she had reached the final of Roland Garros, which she lost to Maria Sharapova.

The main tournament of Indian Wells (premier tournament for women, 1000s for men) starts on Monday with the women’s qualification and on Tuesday with the men’s qualification. The first round of the main field starts for the ladies on Wednesday, for the men on Thursday.
