Svetlana Kuznetsova fought hard on her return to the WTA tour – last year’s finalist against Aryna Sabalenka was the loser.
Almost unnoticed in addition to the big comebacks of Serena Williams and Victoria Aazrenka, Indian Wells also saw a two-time Major Winner return to the WTA tour in Indian Wells: Svetlana Kuznetsova, who had been defeated a year ago in the final of her compatriot Elena Vesnina’s final, lost after a break of several months against her fellow countryman Elena Vesnina.
Kuznetsova had most recently competed at the China Open in October, but had already lost to Spain’s Lara Arruabarena in round one. After that, Kuznetsova had to undergo surgery on her left wrist, but she missed the Australian Open.
The 32-year-old Russian’s last match win is from the US Open, where Kuznetsova won in round one against Czech Marketa Vondrousova. In New York City, Svetlana Kuznetsova also celebrated one of her two major victories in 2004. The veteran won her second Grand Slam title in Paris in 2009.
