Felix Auger-Aliassime has made history at the ATP Masters 1000 Tournament in Indian Wells and is on his way to the next round in the USA.
The name Felix Auger-Aliassime has been haunting the tableaux of the ATP tour for some time now. Now the Canadian provided the first big exclamation mark of his still young career.
At the age of just 17, Auger-Aliassime made history with his victory over fellow countryman Vasek Pospisil. The Canadian is the youngest player of his generation to win the ATP Tour since Denis Shapovalov defeated Nick Kyrgios in 2016.
After an hour and 39 minutes of play, the youngster turned his match point into a 6-2 and 7-6 (4) win. No player born in the year 2000 or later has ever achieved this feat.
The Canadian was convincing all along the line. Eleven aces struck on the side of Pospisil and also three break points against Auger-Aliassime resisted with bravura. Remarkable was the fact that the 17-year-old lost only four (!) points on his own serve in the first round and played his opponent twice against the wall.
A forehand winner along the line finally sealed the young player’s greatest success.
In the next round Auger-Aliassime will meet the next Canadian in the form of Milos Raonic, who was allowed to enjoy a walk-through in the first round.
