ATP: Maximilian Marterer is defeated by Tomas Berdych in Indian Wells

Maximilian Marterer was eliminated in the second round of the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Indian Wells: The young German lost to Tomas Berdych from the Czech Republic 1:6 and 4:6.

Berdych started the match untouchably, scoring 6-1 in the first set. At the beginning of the second round, however, it was Marterer who started with a break and took the lead 3:0. Berdych, however, played out his entire routine, scored the equaliser and finally managed to break 5-4. Though Marterer had the chance to make a comeback in front of coach and Davis Cup captain Michael Kohlmann’s eyes in the last game, after 71 minutes Berdych secured his way into the third round with an ace, where he will face either Hyeon Chung or Dusan Lajovic.

Marterer was not allowed to be dissatisfied with his performances in Indian Wells. Eventually, the 22-year-old defeated Ivo Karlovic in round one after defending a match ball. Peter Gojowczyk and Jan-Lennard Struff were eliminated at the start, Mischa Zverev will play in round two on Sunday – as well as the German number one, Alexander Zverev, who has to play against the Portuguese Joao Sousa.
